ST03 average response time & processing time - which components up these?

Hi

Weu2019re having a little difficulty understanding how SAP calculates itu2019s DIALOG average response times and which

components contribute to the overall average.

One of SAPu2019s recommendations is that u2018Processing timeu2019 should be less than 2 times the CPU time u2013 and ours is

often over this (although overall average times are fine).

What we need to understand is what elements u2018Processing timeu2019 includes. As it stands, we are calculating this

in the following way:

Average response time u2013 (Av. DB time + Av. Wait time + Av. Roll Wait time + Av. Load + Gen. Time)

I.e. this is what is DOESN'T include, but to get to the root problem of why our figure is high, we need to know

what it DOES include.

Logic would then dictate that this time is made up of the remaining elements in the list from ST03 u2013 i.e. CPU

time, roll, lock, RFC & GUI time. However this is not the case u2013 this figure is larger than the processing time

above.

Similarly,  you would think that the average time would be made up of all the components:

Ø Time     Proc. T     Ø CPU T     Ø DB T  Ø T     Ø Wt Ø Rll In Ø Roll Wait      Ø Ld+G Ø LockT Ø CPIC/RFC     Ø Time Ø GUI Time

851.8     215.4     112.3     422.5     0     1.9     2.9          183.2             4          21.9          25.3             92.8          147.1

However itu2019s not, the total time is much higher. I did read a note saying that GUI time is not included here,

but even subtracting that, this does not add up. I also saw something about CPU not being an additive component

to this; rather there is some CPU in each of these components; but still can't get the numbers to add up.

I assume network time needs to also be considered... I did try adding what I though was the most sensible

figures and got a value just under the total average, and assumed the rest was network time. However, I then

did the same with another days figures and the amount was higher than the total average!

Please could someone assist on how the ST03 figures are calculated/what exactly u2018processing timeu2019 is made

of/where we should be looking to find the root cause of this breach of recommended response times.

Thanks

Ross
